Risk situations
The more alcohol you consume, the slower you react to changes around you and the more impaired your judgment. After consuming alcohol, do not engage in any risky activity where your decisions may be vital to your safety and the safety of those around you.
Binge or heavy episode drinking (HED)
Although definitions vary, binge drinking or heavy episodic drinking (HED) is generally defined as the consumption of large amounts of alcohol in a short period of time resulting in alcohol intoxication. Binge drinking can have serious consequences for the individual and the people around them, including health damage, accidents, brain damage, unwanted sex, and even death. Binge drinking is never a good decision.
Exercise control
How much and how fast you drink, as well as what else you eat or drink, can make a difference, at least in the short term. When in doubt, stop drinking and wait until you are sure you are in control and able to make the right decisions.
Not everyone wants to consume
Many people choose not to drink alcohol for cultural, religious or other personal reasons. The decision not to consume alcohol should always be respected. Avoid or limit alcohol consumption when you are sick or in a bad mood or in a situation where drinking does not seem appropriate. If you can’t control your consumption, you shouldn’t drink alcohol at all.
Do not consume if you are a minor
Most countries have a minimum legal age for purchasing or consuming alcoholic beverages. In Lithuania, it is 20 years, Estonia and Latvia – 18 years. Purchase and use by minors is illegal and can harm a person’s physical and mental development. Make sure you understand and follow the laws.
Driving
Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your ability to drive, so the only safe advice is to avoid alcohol if you are driving.
Alcohol and pregnancy
Men and women who are considering starting a family should discuss their alcohol use with their health care provider. Drinking during pregnancy can adversely affect the fetus. There is no agreed safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy. Choosing not to drink alcohol is the only right decision. Drinking alcohol while breastfeeding can have a negative effect on your baby. Avoid drinking alcohol if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
